Future of Haptics in Virtual Reality


Rendering haptics, or touch-sensing, in virtual reality and mixed reality (VR/MR) is crucial for rich, immersive experiences. Discover what Microsoft researchers believe to be the future of haptics in VR. Presented by Eyal Ofek (Principal Researcher) and Mike Sinclair (Senior Principal Researcher) from Microsoft Research, Redmond.



Haptic Controllers & Rich Haptics for MR



shapeShift is a compact, high-resolution (7 mm pitch), mobile tabletop shape display. We explore potential interaction techniques in both passive and active mobile scenarios. In the passive case, the user is able to freely move and spin the display as it renders elements. We introduce use cases for rendering lateral I/O elements, exploring volumetric datasets, and grasping and manipulating objects. On an active omnidirectional-robot platform, shapeShift can display moving objects and provide both vertical and lateral kinesthetic feedback. We use the active platform as an encounter-type haptic device combined with a head-mounted display to dynamically simulate the presence of virtual content. Future work will continue to explore the diverse dynamic interactions afforded by high-fidelity mobile shape-changing interfaces.

Create Believable Haptic Feedback with Meta’s Haptics Studio & Haptics SDK


Hi XR developers! In this video I will show you how to set-up and use Meta’s new Haptics Studio and Haptics SDK for Unity! We are also going to learn how to set-up haptic feedback without those tools for quick prototyping. Then we will set-up each tool, design our own haptic feedback pattern by either doing so manually or automatically by uploading an audio file and letting Haptics Studio do the work for us! We will then export those files and import it into Unity using the Haptics SDK and integrate those haptic feedbacks into some example interactions!

FREE VR Full Body Tracking With Any Camera

GRACIA Gaussian Splatting in VR


A Delaware based startup, Gracia, emerged out of nowhere earlier this afternoon with an open Beta to view Gaussian Splats in VR. Gracia is supported on Windows and is downloadable from their website. It is a one click to install platform


 


Gracia’s mission is to provide people with photo-realistic volumetric videos.

For those who have not had a chance to experience radiance fields in VR, they are surprisingly compelling, as the view depending features continue to shine through and allows you walk through the space. Depending on your capture, it can hold great significant sentimental value to you— it really becomes a frozen moment in time.

Gracia’s vision is to provide people with photo-realistic volumetric videos.

Currently there are six scenes to choose from, all of which are coming from research papers. However, Gracia is able to support any .PLY that includes valid SH3 data, including those made by Luma AI or Polycam.

As part of their recommendations, they suggest using a 3070 at minimum to view the Splat scenes in realtime. With a 4090, they were able to achieve 550 fps at 2x2224x2160. However, these are not strict requirements; Gracia is designed to be flexible, catering to a wide range of hardware capabilities.
